Iolite is a beautiful deep purple or indigo gem-quality variation of the Cordierite mineral. In jewelry design, Iolite looks lovely with silver metals. Iolite compliments many other purple and blue gemstones including Charoite and Lapis. 

This stone is named after the Greek word “io,” meaning “violet.” Viking explorers used Iolite as a spiritual stone and talisman in their voyages. Iolite is often referred to as “Viking’s Compass.” Today, Iolite is found most often in mountainous regions of Europe and Africa, including Germany, Norway, and Finland, Madagascar, Tanzania, and Zimbabwe. Brazil is also a common location of Iolite crystals.
