Impression Jasper is a sand-colored natural gemstone with white matrix patterning, often dyed vibrant colors like red, pink, or blue. Impression Jasper was originally discovered in Germany and can be found in mountainous regions across Europe and in the United States. This stone has also been referred to as “Utahlite” since it is commonly found in the state of Utah. Impression Jasper which was formerly referred to as variscite was first described in 1837 and named for the locality of Variscia, the ancient Latin name for Vogtland in Germany. Naturally, the stone comes in a creamy, beige, sand, or tan color, with splashes of a muted opaque baby blue peeking through, but it has also been known to be dyed leaving interesting webbed voids where the dye is not absorbed.
